Duke Thomas was not elected for life. He was not elected by the people. He was not elected by the future. He was not elected by any nation. He was not elected by anyone. He was elected by the people, against their will, to send him back to his home, into the television that he loved so much, into the world that he had abandoned, into the television that he once loved, into the world that he had abandoned. And if he could not be returned to his old world, then he would go to the next closest one.
Finally, the month comes to a close with the appearance of the final Robin in Titans, Barbara Gordon, in the first episode of the new season. The very last name Dick Grayson manages to detect on the screen of the Batcomputer minutes before Bruce Wayne goes into the Batcave is that of Duke Thomas, who appears on the screen of the Batcomputer moments before Bruce Wayne walks into the Batcave. Duke is the newest Robin of the group we’ve seen together, but he’s also one of the most important, having developed into his own hero outside of the sidekick realm. Let’s return to Prime Earth and meet the last Robin.
Duke Thomas was the biological son of the immortal supervillain Gnomon, but to escape from him, his mother Elaine fled to Gotham City, where she raised her unaware baby boy with her new husband, Doug Thomas. Living in Gotham was no joke at all, and when he was still a young student Duke witnessed his city taken hostage by the Riddler, who cut all power, and challenged the population to smart up and propose him a riddle he couldn’t solve: even Duke participated to the challenge, training his mind extensively, before Batman solved the situation his usual way. Things got even worse some year later, when The Joker kidnapped Duke and his parents and, having figured out Batman’s secret identity, planned to use them to recreate the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne just in front of his enemy. Batman saved the day once again, but Elaine and Doug had already been exposed to the Joker’s gas and had lost their sanity. Duke was entrusted to the care of Julia Pennyworth by Batman, who then left to fight the Joker in a battle that saw both of them apparently perish. Gotham’s life changed, but so did also Duke’s one: he entered foster care, and he kept escaping from every foster home in the effort of locating his parents, missing after the tragedy. His grades dropped, and from model student he became almost a street delinquent, all the while disappointing Dr. Thompkins, the one assigned to his social case. When he heard that some of the victims of Joker’s toxin wandered in the sewers, he escaped once again, and started looking there… only to stumble in a weird cult that was planning to bomb several key locations in Gotham. Duke was spotted and attacked, but some kids in red saved him: they were the young vigilantes from the We Are Robin movement. Duke was saved, and then abandoned in the streets unconscious: when he woke up, he was in a police interrogation room.
The policeman in front of him was a weird guy, who asked him what he was ready to do to find his parents: Duke told him it was the cops’ job, and the man left, telling him to take his life into his own hands… and left the room open. Duke found a motorcycle, a jacket and a phone: following the instructions from the mysterious Nest app on the phone, he reached two of the kids who had saved him before, Dax and Troy, and helped them locate the bombs the cult that had attacked him had planted. The first was successfully deactivated, but the second, that Nest had ordered them not to touch, exploded when tampered with, killing Troy. After the episode, Duke Thomas joined the group, and officially became a Robin… until the movement came under fire, framed by the Court of Owls. The We Are Robin became illegal, and even the true Robin and a replacement Batman tried to apprehend them: only the intervention of Red Hood and Red Robin gave the kids a chance to explain themselves. When the so-called Robin War was over, Duke came back to his life, and resumed his search for his parents: he found them, completely deranged, in a temporary shelter. Shortly after, a Joker-obsessed teen, John “Smiley” Bender Jr., attacked Duke’s school: the boy defeated him, but he turned down an offer from the Nest to rejoin the group, ad from there on he wanted to rely only on himself. A misadventure with the supervillain Mr. Bloom drew Duke close to an amnesiac Bruce Wayne, and he pierced through his psyche enough to make him remember he was Batman. Grateful, Batman offered him a place in his Bat-Family, offering him to be trained as a proper vigilante. Duke, however, wouldn’t have been a Robin anymore, he was something different: he was light to Batman’s shadow, and he would have protected Gotham by day. He would have been The Signal, a light of hope for everyone… and the fact that he had inherited metahuman abilities from his biological father would have helped.
Duke Thomas is a courageous, resolute young guy who has been through a lot for his age and has always risen to fight back. Signal is a young genius with extensive MMA training who can fight proficiently bare-handed or with his eskrima sticks; he has photokinetic abilities that allow him to manipulate light, turn himself invisible, and use his so-called Ghost Vision, which allows him to see some minutes in the future or in the past by following light’s ghost signals, and to see through walls, smoke screens, and other obstacles. Signal, once Robin, is now his own hero, ready to defend Gotham the way he hasn’t been protected, attempting to bring some light to a city that is much too used to the worst darkness.
