Order of the Ice Age Films
1. The Ice Age (2002)
Ice Age, the first feature film from Blue Sky Studios, was released in 2002, at a time when the animation industry was dominated by the Disney-Pixar-Dreamworks triumvirate. It follows three Pleistocene-era characters, Sid the sloth, Manny the woolly mammoth, and Diego the saber-toothed tiger, as they go on a quest to return a Neanderthal baby (named Roshan) to its clan.

Soto, the leader of a pack of saber-tooth tigers, keeps a watch on the humans with the help of Diego, a feline follower. Soto plans to eat Runar’s son Roshan the next morning, seeking revenge on the humans for murdering half of his pack.
The assault takes place, with Diego pursuing Nadia; however, she manages to escape with Roshan by leaping over the waterfalls, leaving Diego alone in Soto; the pack plans to rendezvous at Half Peak, where Diego will produce the child for Soto.
Manny and Sid keep walking, Manny annoyed by the sloth’s constant talking, until they come upon Nadia on a riverside, badly weakened by her leap over the rapids and barely manages to give her child to Manny before she disappears. Manny leaves, but Sid intends to reunite the baby with his “herd,” a task that Manny will not help with.
After a surprise assault by ferocious Soto’s hungry pack of saber-toothed tigers, a defenseless infant is left behind. Following this tragic event, Manny, the colossal shaggy mammoth, Sid, the sloth-like outcast, and Diego, the clever primeval tiger, go on a perilous quest to find the baby’s parents, unknowing that danger is more closer than they think. Will the unlikely rescuers be able to find the human family before the Earth is engulfed by enormous glaciers?
2. The Meltdown of the Ice Age (2006)
While Manny, Sid, and Diego made a second appearance in 2006’s Ice Age: The Meltdown, they were accompanied this time by a larger ensemble of supporting characters, including Ellie, Crash, and Eddie, who would all appear in future sequels. The film follows the aforementioned people as they fight to survive when severe floods makes icy terrain unaccessible.
Manny the woolly mammoth, Sid the sloth, Diego the saber-toothed tiger, and Scrat the unlucky prehistoric squirrel/rat are still together and benefiting from their melting world.
After Fast, two young people escape in terror. The valley’s resident con artist, Tony (a six-banded armadillo), claims that the world is going to flood and that the bark and reeds (which he sells) are essential for survival. Manfred dismisses the idea, but is enthralled when he sees Sid try a high dive from a huge waterfall.
Manny and Diego find that the good weather has enabled the valley’s huge, bowl-shaped glacier’s underlying layers of ice to melt as they ascend to the top of the waterfall to save Sid from his foolish act. Only the glaciers’ outer layers, which formed a dam, kept the valley from overflowing.
Manny warns everyone about the impending disaster in the valley if the dam collapses. The animals, on the other hand, laugh it off, while a haughty aardvark challenges Manny’s advice in light of the demise of his own species, mammoths. However, when an intimidating vulture warns them of their approaching fate, the animals’ good spirits begin to fade. The valley inhabitants are relieved when he casually unveils a large boat at the valley’s end that may rescue them all.
Manny may be ready to have a family, but there hasn’t been a mammoth sighting in a long time, and he thinks he is the last. That is, until Ellie, the world’s only female mammoth, appears out of nowhere. Their only problem is that they hate each other—and Ellie thinks she’s a possum! Crash and Eddie, Ellie’s two possum “brothers,” are two brave pranksters and boisterous, loud-mouthed troublemakers.
Manny, Sid, and Diego quickly learn that a rising climate has one major drawback: a huge glacial barrier that has been holding back seas of water is on the brink of collapse, putting the whole valley in jeopardy. The valley’s far end holds the sole chance of survival. As a result, our three protagonists form the most unlikely family—in any “Age”—as they embark on a journey for atonement across an ever-changing, more dangerous world.
3. The Ice Age: The Beginning of the Dinosaurs (2009)
The Princess and the Frog, Pixar’s Up, Laika’s Coraline, and Disney’s The Princess and the Frog all received critical praise in 2009. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is a lesser-known – but nonetheless important – addition to our list, since it follows the main protagonists from the first film as they attempt to save Sid from a forgotten, underground habitat inhabited by a hostile herd of dinosaurs. Despite the fact that critics panned the film, fans of the originals were ecstatic with this lighthearted continuation of the series.
Manny and his friends’ life continue to alter after the events of “Ice Age: The Meltdown”: Scrat is still searching for his prized acorn while also seeking a potential romance with Scratte, a female saber-toothed squirrel. Manny and Ellie, who have now married, are expecting a kid, and Manny is anxious to make sure everything is in place for his baby’s birth.

Sid has a yearning for a family of his own and steals some dinosaur eggs, which traps him in a mysterious subterranean realm, where his herd must rescue him while evading dinosaurs and avoiding danger at every step, and there he meets Buck, a one-eyed weasel obsessed with dinosaur hunting.
4. Continental Drift During the Ice Age (2012)
Blue Sky Animation had surpassed such big companies as Pixar and Dreamworks in terms of animated films, and they weren’t about to lose out on another chance to capitalize on their enormous success. Ice Age: Continental Drift, which was published in 2012, follows the party as they try to avoid numerous confrontations with deadly pirates while trapped on an adrift ice block after the acorn-minded Scrat’s break-up of a supercontinent.

Peaches voiced her dissatisfaction with Manny, saying she wished he had never been her father.
Manny and his friends find Granny after surviving a severe sea storm. Granny had spent the whole time inside a tree trunk on the same floating iceberg as Manny and his colleagues. A group of pirates led by Captain Gutt, a Gigantopithecus, and Shira, a female saber-toothed cat, capture Manny and his friends. Gutt and the pirate crew try to recruit Manny and his pals (by singing them a song to introduce them to Gutt along the way), but they turn them down.
Gutt then tries to force them to walk the plank, but they manage to get away, destroying the pirate ship in the process. Shira gets separated from Gutt and the pirates, and the pirate crew is worried for her safety, but Gutt abandons her. Shira, on the other hand, is rescued by the herd.
In his never-ending search for the ideal supply of spherical and shiny acorns, Scrat, the restless saber-toothed squirrel, inadvertently sets off an epic geologic chain reaction. Manny gets separated from Ellie and their rebellious teenage daughter, Peaches, as a consequence, and finds himself trapped on a large iceberg with Diego, Sid, and Manny’s fiery grandma, Granny.
To make matters worse, the mismatched sailors run across the ultimate sea monster: the weathered savage pirate Captain Gutt, who wants to sell them as slaves. Will the ice-newest galley’s recruits ever be reunited with their loved ones?
5. Collision Course During the Ice Age (2016)
With Ice Age: Collision Course, released in 2016, Blue Sky offered the Ice Age series a record-breaking fifth episode with fresh animation. The same beloved characters from the previous four films return, this time to avoid extinction at the hands of a series of deadly meteorites sent hurtling towards Earth by the ever-oblivious Scrat.
The film starts with Scrat (voiced by Chris Wedge) trying to find a good storage place for his acorn, as is usual. Before he can poke it in, he smashes through some ice and into what seems to be a cave. Scrat puts the acorn on a pad, causing a huge flying saucer to activate. He frees it from the ice block it was imprisoned in and sends it into space. After colliding with the planets like pinballs or pool balls, Scrat is propelled out of the saucer with the acorn. He decides to put it inside an asteroid, which separates spontaneously and hurtles toward Earth.
Manny and Ellie, meantime, are planning for Peaches’ upcoming wedding to Julian. Diego and his wife Shira want to have a family, but their frightening appearance makes youngsters afraid of them. Sid’s girlfriend, Francine, leaves him just before he proposes, and he laments his loneliness.
During Manny and Ellie’s wedding anniversary party, several asteroids strike the site, and The Herd barely escapes. Meanwhile, Buck returns a dinosaur egg to its rightful owner in the underground lost planet after it was stolen by Gavin, Gertie, and Roger, a trio of flying tyrannosaurs. Buck unearths an old stone pillar and carries it to the surface, where he comes face to face with Manny and the others.
Is it necessary to see the Ice Age movies in order?
The Ice Age films may be seen and enjoyed on their own. However, since all of the Ice Age films have the same storyline and characters, seeing them in order may help you better understand the story.
