Jemiah the Analyzer – Who’s Who
Jemiah the Analyzer – Who’s Who I came across this blog by chance a few years ago, and have been hooked ever since. I have been inspired by the stories that have been shared by Jemiah’s friends and followers, and I am confident that there are many people out there who have been touched by this beautiful soul.
Jemiah the Analyzer, a green giant that seems to reconstruct himself from dust in outer space, is the second Celestial seen in the new Eternals video. There isn’t much to predict about his function in the film, since Celestials typically have just one mission: to study life on a planet and decide if it is worthy of existence. Given that the MCU continues beyond Eternals, the solution to that question may already be known… maybe. Anyway, let’s look at Jemiah in his original form.
The Celestials were beings older than the universe itself, space gods who moved from a creation to the following spurred by their own thirst for knowledge, that prompted them to study every form of life on every planet in the Multiverse, and to experiment on them, creating variations and observing the results on the long term. In the Prime Celestial Host, the most powerful faction of Celestials, Jemiah the Analyzer had the task to analyze the single life forms brought to his attention by his partner, Gammenon the Gatherer, to study their biological status and their civilization, and to present to his leader, Arishem the Judge, the results of his observations, so that he could determine whether or not the examined civilization had become a threat to the universe, and had thus to be erased. Among the many worlds visited and studied by Jemiah, there was Tarakar, a planet inhabited by one of the most interesting races the Celestials had created: the Skrulls. When for most races the balance between the original batch, the genetically unstable Deviants and the powerful and immortal Eternals was maintained throughout the millennia, with sometimes the Eternals prevailing over the other two, the Skrulls were a rare exception, as the Deviants had become the dominant species, and had colonized several other worlds, developing enough as conquerors to understand how gods worked, and to “steal” the deities from the colonized civilizations, rendering them powerless by hiding their idols into their own temples and shrines, so that the population would have eventually forgotten about them, denying them their faith and thus their nourishment. Jemiah was particularly intrigued by the Skrulls, but when he visited Tarakar again he didn’t even notice Emperor Kylor, who effortlessly tried to speak to him, nor the massive nuclear attack launched against him: he stood still, and observed.
Eventually, all of Jemiah’s observations over the Skrulls and over the other races he had been entrusted with ended up on Earth, another one of the billions planets he was analyzing; here, the local Eternals found the indecipherable text, and considered it sacred scripture, the testament of their gods. The Fractal Scriptures of Jemiah the Analyzer remained a mysterious sacred text for centuries, until one of the Eternals, Ajak, managed to decipher it, opening Jemiah’s knowledge of other people and other civilizations to Earth’s Eternals. Jemiah had come to Earth with Arishem and the others a million years ago, overwatching the creation of Eternals and Deviants from the genetic string of a hominid species that would have evolved into humans, and came back for the Second Host to analyze the progresses. In this occasion, he became part of a conspiracy to silence Tiamut the Communicator, a fellow Celestial who opposed Arishem the Judge: Jemiah joined forces with Hargen the Measurer, Tefral the Surveyor and Nezarr the Calculator to subdue Tiamut, and they left him on Earth, buried under a mountain and forever dormant, while Arishem ordered a flood to wipe out the civilization of Deviants, that had become far too powerful and dangerous to the other species. Around 1000 AD, Jemiah the Analyzer came back to Earth with the Third Host, and landed in modern Peru, where the Incas built for them a citadel on the Andes. This time, the Celestials were confronted by three representatives of the Council of Godheads, Odin, Zeus and Vishnu, who questioned their right to meddle with Earth affairs. Disciplined by Arishem the Judge in person, the gods left, allowing the Celestials to complete their work and leave the planet undisturbed, but Odin was already scheming for the moment they would have returned. Jemiah the Analyzer had found a remarkable progress in humanity, and was eager to see if, with the data he would have collected with the Fourth Host, they would have been allowed to live or not…
A virtually omnipotent space deity with a vast knowledge of the universe and its mysteries Jemiah the Analyzer is a dedicated worker who knows and analyzes hundreds of civilizations throughout the cosmos in order to assess their development. He’s an incredibly strong god as a Celestial, an immortal and invulnerable creature who has much more mastery over matter and energy than any other deity in the cosmos, and who can do just much whatever he wants, from teleportation to flying, invisibility to telepathy. Jemiah, who is older than the cosmos itself, exists to analyze, research, and categorize: others must interpret the data he generates, but he is a crucial link in the chain that determines the survival or death of whole civilizations.
